Sesame Street Anniversary!!!!
November 4, 2009
Today my HM wanted to do a post about Sesame Street……..I am still feeling under-the-weather and don’t feel much like blogging these days, so I figured why not.
Apparently my Aunt Goodbear was sucked into the Sesame Vortex big time as a child. The HM says she used to giggle when “The Count” counted, and she had it bad for some guy named “Cookie” (purrrsonally, some guy named “Cookie” sounds like a dude you’d meet in a biker bar).
She had a book called “There’s a monster at the end of this Book” by a guy named Grover, and my HM used to have to read it over and over and over again. The monster at the end of the book was Grover himself and the book eventually feel apart from wear.
Aunt Goodbear probably doesn’t remember a lot of it; but those memories are fond for the HM and they are etched in her mind forever. Happy, Happy times.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN from PennyCat!!
October 31, 2009

HALLOWEEN QUIZ:
1. Which country celebrate the Day of the Dead starting at midnight October 31st? Ireland, Germany, Mexico or China?
The Mexican custom of El Día de los Muertos — the Day of the Dead — may sound much like the U.S. custom of Halloween. After all, the celebration traditionally starts at midnight the night of Oct. 31, and the festivities are abundant in images related to death.
2. According to Halloween superstition, what should you do if you want to see a witch? Light a fire at a crossroad at midnight, Carry a lamp to a spring of water, or put your clothes on inside out and walk backwards?
Some people claimed that if you put your clothes on inside out and then walked backwards on the night of Halloween, then at midnight, you would see a witch riding through the sky.
3. The ancient Celts began the tradition of wearing masks and costumes on Halloween. Why? To trick evil spirits, to avoid being recognized to honor the dead, or just for fun?
According to an ancient Celtic belief, spirits and ghosts roam the countryside on Halloween night, and the only safe way to travel that night is by wearing a mask and costume so the evil spirits won’t recognize you as human.
4. According to superstition, on Halloween night owls would swoop down and feast on the souls of the dying. How could you protect yourself from hungry owls? Turn your pockets out, and leave them hanging. Sew a penny in your sleeve, or walk around your house three times backwards?
Some people believed that if you heard a hooting owl, you could quickly pull your pocket out and leave it hanging and you’d be safe from the diving owl.
5. According to superstition, what does it mean if you see a spider on Halloween? A dead relative is watching over you, death will come to you in the next year, you will marry with the year or your house needs to be cleaned?
Some people believe that if you see a spider on Samhain, it harbors the spirit of a dead ancestor, watching you… so don’t squash it!
6. It was believed that on Halloween, spirits and other evil creatures roamed the earth. How could you protect yourself? Sacrifice an animal, bury animal bones in your front yard, or host a “dumb supper”?
Burying animal bones in front of your house on the night of Samhain will keep evil away, according to some legends of eastern Europe. It was also believed that ringing a bell on Samhain kept them away.

Cooking with PennyCat
October 27, 2009
As the cooler fall temperatures creep into our neck of the woods, I start thinking more of baking……AHHH; the smell of baked tuna and the warmth of the oven!! Here good readers is another one of my favorite recipes:
PennyCat’s Fabulosso Tuna Pizza
- One pizza crust ( I buy the crust all prepared, because paws with fur make it a real challenge to get the dough spread out on the pizza pan. However, if you aren’t a cat, make your own dam crust.
- 15 oz. can white beans, rinsed and drained (when you use the can opener all the little brothers come a running)
- 2 Tbsp. white wine vinegar (don’t get it in your eyes, it stings!!!)
- 1/2 tsp. dried oregano leaves (we have fresh oregano in the HM’s garden that we use)
- 1/2 tsp. dried thyme leaves
- salt and pepper to taste (this stuff makes you sneeze)
- 6 oz. can solid pack white tuna, drained (pour the juice on that cheap dry food you give the little brothers)
- 1 (7 oz.) jar roasted red peppers, drained, chopped
- 14 oz. can diced tomatoes, well-drained
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese grated(sample this and make sure its ok)
White beans are mashed up to form the ’sauce’. If I dump the beans in the bathtub and throw the little brothers in, they mash them up nicely!!
In medium bowl, combine beans, vinegar, oregano, thyme, and salt and pepper to taste. Mash beans, leaving some texture in the mixture. Spread bean mixture over crust. Top with tuna, red peppers, and tomatoes. Sprinkle cheeses over all and bake at 450 degrees until bubbly (about 20 minutes). Have a human put it in the oven to avoid singed whiskers!!
Yummy, serve with a bottle of Hazlitt White Cat wine!!!
Penny on Pablo
October 25, 2009
Yep, boys and girls today was good old Pablo Picasso’s b-day!! He was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. He had his first art show at age 13 and at age 19 he had already produced hundreds of paintings. There are over 50,000 assorted art pieces by Pablo, and in 1907, Picasso painted the groundbreaking work Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, which, with its fragmented and distorted representation of the human form, broke from previous European art.
This work was seen as the forerunner of the Cubist movement, founded by Picasso and the French painter Georges Braque in 1909. Picasso and Braque established the modern principle that artwork need not represent reality to have artistic value. Picasso and Braque’s Cubist experiments also resulted in the invention of several new artistic techniques, including collage.
So….Happy Birthday Pablo and thanks for the Cubism!!!
Penny’s thoughts…….
October 23, 2009

If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.
Ambition is a poor excuse for not having enough sense to be lazy.
Hard work pays off in the future, laziness pays off now.
Borrow money from pessimists – they don’t expect it back.
New York’s Autumn by PennyCat
October 21, 2009
“I am rich today with autumn’s gold,
All that my covetous hands can hold;
Frost-painted leaves and goldenrod,
A goldfinch on a milkweed pod,
Huge golden pumpkins in the field
With heaps of corn from a bounteous yield,
Golden apples heavy on the trees
Rivaling those of Hesperides,
Golden rays of balmy sunshine spread
Over all like butter on warm bread;
And the harvest moon will this night unfold
The streams running full of molten gold.
Oh, who could find a dearth of bliss
With autumn glory such as this!”
- Gladys Harp

No Spring nor Summer Beauty hath such grace
As I have seen in one Autumnal face.
John Donne

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold,
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
Robert Frost

Lo! sweeten’d with the summer light,
The full-juiced apple, waxing over-mellow,
Drops in a silent autumn night.
All its allotted length of days
The flower ripens in its place,
Ripens and fades, and falls, and hath no toil,
Fast-rooted in the fruitful soil.
Alfred Lord Tennyson
“Listen! the wind is rising, and the air is wild with leaves,
We have had our summer evenings, now for October eves!”
- Humbert Wolfe
The Whisker Caper – Page 46 The final chapter
October 19, 2009
The rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor grew mesmerizing as Puss sat quietly next to Dan’s bed holding his right paw. The doctors said his condition had greatly improved, and Puss eagerly waited for a sign that what they said was true. It had been three full days since his shooting, and Dan had never regained conciousness. She longed to see his green eyes and hear his gentle purr. The Kevlar vest was designed to saved Dan’s life, but the bullets that missed the Kevlar protection had nearly done him in. Puss had been briefed on the whole tuna shakedown. She had learned that the plan had been 26 months in the making and that the CIA had recruited Dan, Nick and a group of others to play the role of “The Fangs”. Even Loretta Loosetail had been an actor in the intricate story. Puss felt terrible that she hadn’t trusted Dan. She had assumed that his inability to explain his relationship with Loretta was simply his unwillingness to admit the truth to her.
The clock on the wall said 1:00 a.m. and Puss was struggling to stay awake; her last cup of coffee had done nothing to help with the fatigue that was overwhelming her body. Her head nodded several times and she dozed off. At 2:15 she awoke with a start, to feel the gentle squeeze of the paw she was still holding on to. She raised her head and their eyes met. Puss’s filled with tears, as Dan smiled at her and mouthed the words, “I love you”. She stood and leaned into his ear and replied softly, “I love you too, I always have and I always will.” She gently leaned forward and rubbed her whiskers against his and smiled. The End
