Superbowl Kitty Munchies
January 31, 2009
AHHHHHH!!! Superbowl!!! No I am not a football fan, and neither are the humans I live with……however, it has come to my attention that this is a great excuse to sit around and stuff yourself full of all types of snacks. So, I have just become a huge FOOTBALL FAN! Furrrthermore, why should the humans be the only ones allowed to snack for this event.
Here’s my PennyCat Superbowl Munchies Recipe, so get busy baking people.
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup soy flour
1/2 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup dried catnip
1/4 cup canned tuna (water packed) — well drained (give remaining tuna to cat immediately to keep it quiet while you bake)
1/2 cup juice from drained tuna — Add water if needed
1/2 cup corn oil
1 egg — lightly whisked
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a large bowl, combine dry ingredients and mix. Then add remaining ingredients and stir to form a stiff dough. If the dough seems to sticky, add a little more whole wheat flour. Make dough into a ball shape and place on wax paper. Roll out to 1/4 to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut into shapes with animal shaped cookie cutters, if desired. Reroll and cut more cookies until scraps are used. Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet for about 25 minutes. Store in a plastic bag, that you keep tightly wrapped, in the refrigerator.
Who am I rooting for…..hmmm well, I don’t know what a Steeler is (some who takes my food?) but I do know what a Cardinal is, so I am going with the Bird!
Mid-Winter Blahs…ramblings of PennyCat
January 29, 2009
Yep, that is pretty much what I’ve got its not even “mid-winter” yet according to my “kitty calendar”. The HF bought me a bag of “party mix” kitty treats; but even that didn’t do it. Someone make winter go away please!
Even history wasn’t very exciting today:
1845 Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” was published. “Yeah baby….”Once upon a midnight dreary, while I purred so weak and weary”
1924 R. Taylor patented the ice cream cone rolling machine. “I purrsonally don’t care much for the cone; but I do like tuna flavored ice cream!”
1963 Robert Frost died in Boston. “But tree I have seen you taken and tossed, and if you have seen me when I have slept,”
1965 “You’ve lost that lovin feelin” by The Righteous Brothers “Yeah, it’s gone, gone, gone……”(kinda like the snacks in my bowl people!!)
It’s Oprah’s birthday, as well as, Greg Louganis, Tom Selleck and W.C. Fields. Ah, W. C. Fields……he once said “The clever cat eats cheese and breathes down rat holes with baited breath. “ a man after my own heart!
Wintery Wednesday
January 28, 2009
As usual for this time of year the weather is our source of entertainment. Schools are closed, roads are covered, flights are cancelled, a thick blanket of snow covers everything and now the freezing rain is falling to give everything a slick glossy coat of ice.
The winds howled all night, leaving some pretty substantial drifts on the backside of the house.

My plan for today is to work on some subtle furring of the new furrrniture. So, as to make it more “kitty friendly”.
More later……gotta go!
New furniture?
January 27, 2009
The new furniture arrived this morning. I got locked in the bedroom while the two smelly guys brought it in. After the HM got it positioned and the doors closed she let me out.
While I think that the colors compliment my fur nicely, its not squishy like the old stuff. It has a soft feel, but the well worn places are missing. It doesn’t smell like Dad or Mom, and it certainly doesn’t smell like me……but also the smell of my sister Polly is gone now forever. I miss her sometimes. Mom tried to get me to sit in the HF’s new recliner, but I would have no part of it. Purrrhaps if someone rubs tuna on it!

There once was a cat named Camille,
Who had three paws and one wheel.
While chasing a mouse, would tear through the house
and turning a corner would squeal.
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious?
January 25, 2009
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious……yeah that’s right!! It’s from the musical “Mary Poppins” and was written by the Sherman brothers. But did you know that it really has a meaning. Yes, it’s true and I “PennyCat” shall enlighten you!
The roots of the word have been explained as follows: super- “above”, cali- “beauty”, fragilistic- “delicate”, expiali-”toatone”, and docious- “educable”, with the sum of these parts signifying roughly “Atoning for educability through delicate beauty.” This explication of its connotations suits the nature of Mary Poppins, who presents herself as both extremely beautiful and also supremely intelligent and capable of great achievements (kind of like me, in many ways)
According to the film version of the song, “you can say it backwards, which is “Docious-ali-expi-listic-fragi-cali-super“. Julie Andrews, the star of Mary Poppins, has said that her husband at the time, devised this backwards version of the word. In that word, the main syllables are reversed, rather than the order of each letter, with the exception of the end part ‘rupus’ [sic], which is ’super’ spelled backwards. (when I try this, I tend to blow cat food all over the kitchen wall)
In a Saturday Night Live skit, about shortening words, Chris Farley said “Supercalifragilisticexpialidoc”.
The political satire group the Capitol Steps has parodied the word and song numerous times with songs such as SuperCaliforniaRecallFreakShowWasAtrocious, SuperJealousFragileMissWithSexualNeurosis, SuperCallousMeanAndNastyRightWingLegislation, and SuperFranticUnproductiveNothingLegislation.
Me…..well, I think I will just stick with “purrrnow”
Perfect Peace
January 24, 2009
Our hearts and sympathies go out to Dave, his family and Goodbear this morning. For early in the morning hours Dave’s wife and Goodbear’s friend gave up her fight and finally found perfect peace.
For her the suffering is gone, her spirit is now healthy, happy and warm. Those who remain behind can now begin their hearts repair, covering the hurt with happy memories of good times. Healing their heartbreak with visions of her smile when she was well.
We never got to meet her, although we felt we knew her quite well. She must have been a good good person, to have fought so long and so hard to stay with those she loved.
I leave Dave and Goodbear with a poem from my HM Grandmother’s poem book:
If we could see beyond today as God can see;
If all the clouds should roll away, the shadows flee,
O’er present griefs we would not fret, each sorrow we should soon forget,
For many joys are waiting yet, for you and me.
If we could know beyond today, as God doth know.
Why dearest treasures pass away, and tears must flow,
And why the darkness leads to light, why dreary paths will soon grow bright.
Some day life’s wrongs will be made right, faith tells us so.
If we could see, if we could know, we often say.
But God in love a veil doth throw across our way;
We cannot see what lies before, and so we cling to Him the more;
He leads us till this life is o’re.
Trust and obey.
Above 30…….heat wave!!!!
January 23, 2009

WoooHoo, above thirty degrees and sunny!! Let’s have a picnic, no really let’s wash the salt off the car!! Yep, that’s the humans did today. Me well, hmmm,
I took a “sunbath” and a nap or two. It was a nice relaxing Friday. Rumor has it that the new living room furrrniture will be delivered this coming week, so I need to get my fur “in shape” because I am going to have my work cut out for me. Three new pieces of furrniture that will be fur free when they arrive. I hope I am up to this!
The human mother is threatening a vet appointment. It seems that now that she has dragged the human father to his eye doctor, skin doctor and “other” doctor, it is now my turn. She says I have an eye infection, so I have to go. I know I am going to get in trouble for my weight. I hope I see the woman doctor, I don’t like the man and he doesn’t care for me…..the scar on his right index finger proves it!
Here is a poem I found for my cousins, Codybear and Pickles, and all the other “dog” lovin blogger friends I have:
I lie belly-up
In the sunshine, happier than
You ever will be.
Today I sniffed
Many dog butts — I celebrate
By kissing your face.
I sound the alarm!
Paperboy — come to kill us all —
Look! Look! Look! Look! Look!
I sound the alarm!
Garbage man — come to kill us all —
Look! Look! Look! Look! Look!
I lift my leg and
Whiz on each bush. Hello, Spot —
Sniff this and weep.
I Hate my choke chain —
Look, world, they strangle me! Ack
Ack Ack Ack Ack Ack!
Sleeping here, my chin
On your foot — no greater bliss — well,
Maybe catching cats.
Look in my eyes and
Deny it. No human could
Love you as much I do.

Hard lessons are all around us. We as beings created by God, were designed for His enjoyment. He rejoices when we are happy, and shares our sorrows when we cry.
The last week has been a tough for Goodbear and for PennyCat. We are watching people we care about suffer through some pretty tough stuff. But, here is a post to make you smile.
My human, Great Gramma celebrated her birthday on Saturday, turning 93 years young. This amazing woman has been the center of my human father’s family for over seventy
years. She has cooked and cleaned, and ran the house for her family, daughter, grandsons, and great-grand kids. Waited on them hand and foot. Baking pies and cookies by the dozen every week, hanging baskets and baskets of laundry on the line. Beautiful flower gardens once lined their property and her and my human grandmother worked endlessly throughout the spring and summer, starting seeds in the basement with grow lights in early February. The gardens were always something to look forward to every year.
She has brought countless years of joy to many, working tirelessly to make our family complete. She has loved many dogs, cats, kittens and kids, leaving out no one.
The last few years have been tough on her and each birthday we wonder if we will see the next. What a joy it has been to be part of her family. Happy Birthday Great Grandma! We love you!
