In Europe in the 18th century, dead cats wre placed inside the walls of new houses, often with a rat or mouse placed inside the mouth.  This practice was supposed to protect the house from rodent invasions. Purrrsonally, I think it also stopped the neighbors from stopping by to visit!!!! Ewwwww, gross……..

Sunday in Trouble

August 31, 2008

Well, I got in trouble first thing this morning.  It really wasn’t my fault, you see I thought Mom was over sleeping.   She always works on Sundays, and usually in the morning, so at 3 a.m. I gave her a gentle nudge on her right arm, a few rubs, and a purr or two, but she just rolled over and went back a sleep so I left.  Well, at 5 a.m. she still hadn’t gotten up, so I figured I had to use more drastic measures.  I mean I didn’t want her to be late, and my food bowl was EMPTY…….. so I bit her arm!!   She Yelled, and I took off at a dead run!!!  But did she get up NOOOOOO!  So, I did it again.  Now this time she called me a few names (names I can repeat because this is a family blog).  Needless to say, I am not her favorite today.  I see however that I am not the only pet in trouble.  It seems that my blogging buddy Dennis the Vizsla got into some serious trouble himself.  Have a great day, I think I am going to lay low for awhile. Bye!

BAD KITTY!!

BAD KITTY!!

During World War II a cat called “Oscar” served on the German battleship Bismarck.  When the Bismarck was torpedoed Oscar was rescued by a British sailor on board HMS Cossack.  Five months later HMS Cossack was sunk but Oscar was rescued by HMS Ark Royal.  Only three weeks later a German U-Boat destroyed Ark Royal and Oscar was rescued again.  The naval authorities then decided that Oscar had had enough and posted him on land.  According th British naval records, Oscar died peacefully in 1955.  Purrrsonally, I think he truly lived out his “nine lives”. I wonder if he had a military funeral?

It’s been raining for two days now and it is  starting to get on my nerves.  I am not a big fan of rain.  When my sister Polly was alive, she would sit at the front door and be totally mesmerized by the dripping water off the porch railing.  She also loved to play in the shower or any liquid that was left in a glass or cup on a table in the house.

My dislike of rain comes from my terrible fear of thunder.  I will run to the closest hiding spot I can find (usually the basement) and stay there until all danger has passed.   Sometimes, if my human mother is home she will hold me and stroke my fur and speak softly until the storm passes.

If I was a human and I wasn’t afraid of the storm,  I think it would be a good day to curl up with a book and a warm blanket and read; but as a Cat I find it difficult to turn the pages without thumbs and I get frustrated trying.  I really would like to read “To Kill a Mockingbird”  although it’s probably not what I think it is.  I decided that if I were to write a book, perhaps my memoirs, I might call it “The Catnip Cronicles”.  I also think I would like to dabble in poetry, perhaps a “Book of Penny’s Prose”.   Ahh, perhaps it’s just a good day to sit around and daydream.  Wait……maybe a book of riddles, “there once was a cat named Armondo……..

In an average year, American Cat owners spend a total of 295 million on cat litter.  Purrrrsonally, I think I should buy some stock!!!

Loki Remembered

Loki was the first adopted dog that came to our family.  She was the angel who turned our hearts toward the love of animals.  Loki brought joy to anyone who knew her.  She touched the lives of many and brought our family together with her delightful happy personality.  Because of Loki we all went on to care for and adopt other pets.  We all realized what great joy a dog, cat or bird can bring to our lives.

Thank you Loki for the years you gave us, we all still miss you terribly.

Penny Goes Green

August 28, 2008

Today I pondered what environmental impact us cats and dogs could have.  I decided we ourselves could make a difference if we all joined together.  So here are ten of my best tips for helping out our environment.  Lets put our paws together and help out!!!

1.  If cats and dogs did more snuggling and cuddling our Personal Assistants, or Human Parents, we could turn down the thermostats a few degrees.  Snuggling is theraputic as well as fuel efficient.

2.  We could make sure our Personal Assistant or Human Parent is using a manual can opener to open our canned food, not an electric one!!!

3.  We could buy locally raised produce and meats, organically raised, purchased from our local farmers and shops.  It keeps the money in our community and saves gas and time.

4.  Use a water filter system on your tap water, instead of buying bottled water. Bottled water is not only expensive but it generates a tremendous amount of waste.

5.  Use a refillable bottle for water, preferably aluminum not plastic.

6.  Use second hand products whenever possible.  Us cats love second hand blankets and pillows! Our humans could use second hand clothes when walking and playing with dogs, or bathing them.  Second hand towels are great for wiping muddy paws.

7.  Borrow dog training books, and cat care videos from friends or the library.  This saves money, ink and trees.

8.  Make your own cleaning supplies, using baking soda, vinegar, lemon and soap.  This is more pet friendly, less expensive and you save on packaging.

9.  Make your own pet food.  Hey, cook me a chicken, steam me a salmon!!!

10.  Make your Personal Assistants or Human Parents use their cell phones,  computers and other electronics as long as they can.  Donate or recycle when its time to upgrade.  Remember E-waste contains mercury and other toxins.

Little Green Bird

August 27, 2008

My Human Grandma said her little green bird has a “soft tissue injury”,  So I guess he “sprang” his leg or wing, or something like that.  The bird doctor said he just needed to “be still” and rest.  Hmmmm, how come he didn’t get any shots?  Everytime I go to the vet I get a shot.  I am over due for my “well Kitty check-up”.  I get a card in the mail to remind me, and the minute the kitty carrier comes out, I know whats going down.  My vets are a husband and wife team, the woman is soft and gentle and speaks very lowly.  The man vet is very quick and talks very fast.  He and I had it out last year. I won and I left him with three sutures in his left hand…….I hate it, hate it, hate it.  Then I get scolded for being “big boned”.  I tried the diet kitty food and it stinks!!!   Perhaps that reminder card could get misplaced underneath the refrigerator or something like that………

Animal friends and humans

August 26, 2008

Dear Blogging Buddies:

My human grandma’s bird is ill, and she is very upset.  They go to the bird doctor this afternoon.  This bird means a lot to her, and she means a lot to me, so if you could think good happy thoughts and say a little prayer for the little green bird it would be appreciated.  Thanks Bloggers!
